For the third straight event, the Hillsdale College men's golf team saved its best for last, rallying with stronger second and third round scores to finish sixth at the Sunnehanna Collegiate in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
In a meet that got Hillsdale out of the Midwest to compete against a variety of Atlantic, East and South Region teams, the Chargers held their own. Hillsdale was low on the leaderboard after a 12-over opening round and a rough first five holes of the second round, but combined for 14 birdies against seven bogeys in the final 13 holes of the round to claw their way back into contention. A two-over par 282 allowed Hillsdale to shoot an 858, passing three teams in the final round and finishing just three strokes out of fourth place.
Sophomore
Parker Stalcup played one of the best invitationals of his career and posted his best collegiate finish, shooting 72-68-70=210 to finish alone in seventh and lead the Chargers. Facing a tricky course with a par of 70, Stalcup shined when Hillsdale needed him most in the second round, knocking in three birdies and finishing with just one bogey in 18 holes for 68. Stalcup was one of Hillsdale's most consistent golfers with just seven bogeys across the three-round event.
Junior
Jackson Piacsek finished strong after a challenging start, carding 76-72-68=216 to finish tied for 34th. He helped lead the Chargers' final round surge with a two-under day as Hillsdale moved up on the leaderboard as a team.
John Cassiday shot a 74-71-73=218 and
Oliver Marshall carded a 73-74-71=218 to both finish tied for 44th as well for Hillsdale, while freshman
Anthony Stouder scored in both the first and second round for the Chargers and finished tied for 73rd with a 73-73-77=223.
Playing as an individual for the second straight event, junior
Andrew Irvine got stronger with each round, shooting a 76-74-73=223 to finish tied with Stouder in 73rd place for the Chargers.
After a frenetic start to the season with three invitationals in three weeks, Hillsdale will take next week off before returning to the course on Oct. 12 at the Doc Spragg Invitational hosted by the University of Findlay at the Findlay Country. This event will be an important one for the Chargers, with many of the top Midwestern teams from the GLIAC, G-MAC and GLVC set to attend.
