The Hillsdale College baseball team struggled to find rhythm offensively on Saturday, dropping both halves of a doubleheader to 19th-ranked Grand Valley State, 10-1 and 7-2, in neutral site contests at Mountain Dew Park in Marion, Illinois.
Hillsdale finished with just seven total hits on the day against the Lakers, who also held the Chargers to two runs on Friday in a victory.Â
The Chargers pitching staff kept the opening game relatively close through four innings, as starter
Brenden Smith went three innings and gave up three runs, and
Collin Lange worked through a scoreless fourth to give Hillsdale a chance down 3-0 entering the middle innings.Â
GVSU wouldn't be held down for long, however, as the Lakers exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach.Â
Hillsdale got a run on the board in the sixth, as
Carson Tucker drove in
Nolan Coppens on a single to center field after Coppens had started the inning with a leadoff walk. But it wasn't enough to spark a comeback in a 10-1 loss.
Ryan Wiehe added a double and
Billy Porotsky a single and a stolen as well for the Chargers offensively, while Smith (1-1) took the loss on the mound with three strikeouts and three walks through three innings. Lange,
Winston Delp and
Hayden Hoffpauir each pitched in relief as well for Hillsdale.
In the nightcap, Hillsdale held GVSU scoreless for the first two and final five innings, but couldn't overcome a seven-run third inning by the Lakers in a 7-2 loss. GVSU pounded out six hits in that inning and also took advantage of two walks to build a lead Hillsdale couldn't overcome.Â
Nolan Coppens got the Chargers on the board in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of walks by both
Gaard Swenson and
Rocco Tenuta to score both on a double to left field, but Hillsdale struggled to generate offense otherwise.
Tyler Turner added a single and a stolen base for Hillsdale, and Tenuta and Porotsky each finished with a base hit as well.
Isaac Scavarda (0-2) took the loss for Hillsdale, finishing with three strikeouts and three walks in three and two-thirds innings, while
Jeff Klominek pitched three and a third innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts, and
Aaron Jasiak struck out one of the three batters he faced in a scoreless eighth.
Hillsdale falls to 3-6 overall and finishes out the four-game set with GVSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, looking to avoid the sweep and get back on track at the plate in their final contest in Marion, Illinois.
