Looking to avoid a series sweep at the hands of 19th-ranked Grand Valley State, Hillsdale put up the best fight it could in the final game of a four game set on Sunday afternoon at Mountain Dew Park in Marion, Illinois.
It wasn't enough, as although the Chargers held the powerhouse Lakers offense in check to keep the game in reach, Hillsdale couldn't break through at the plate to take advantage in a 3-0 loss.
After allowing GVSU to score 37 runs in the previous three games of the series, Hillsdale's pitching staff put up a great showing on Sunday, limiting GVSU to just three runs, and only two earned.
Logan McLaughlin was the hard-luck loser for the Chargers on the mound, going six innings for a quality start with two strikeouts, two walks and just two earned runs conceded. Senior
Patrick MacLean pitched two scoreless innings of relief and
Josh Novak allowed just one baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning as well for the Chargers.
Offensively, however, Hillsdale only mustered four hits, all singles, in the contest. The Chargers didn't get a baserunner until the third inning, and didn't get a runner in scoring position until the seventh. With runners in scoring position, Hillsdale was 0 for 5 in the game with two strikeouts.
Leadoff hitter
Gaard Swenson was 2 for 4 to lead the Chargers at the plate, and
Nolan Coppens and
Tyler Sowers each chipped in a hit.Â
Hillsdale is now 3-7 coming out of the weekend and will look to reset entering a trip to St. Louis next weekend for a three game set against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. While the Chargers had a tough weekend, the losses did come against a nationally-ranked team, and Hillsdale did have a few positives to build on, including an excellent defensive showing that saw the Chargers commit just one error across the four games.
The Chargers open the weekend series with the Tritons at 3 PM eastern time on Friday, March 6, and play again at 1 PM on Saturday and Sunday in Hillsdale's final non-conference action before the start of conference play.
