Outlook
Hillsdale is off to Florida this weekend for its annual Spring Break trip and a packed schedule of 10 games in six days against a variety of opponents, including several top teams from the Sunshine State.
The Chargers open up on Saturday in the Orlando area with two contests in The Spring Games, starting with a showdown against one of the top teams in the Pacific Northwest, St. Martin's. The Saints are 9-11 but against a brutal schedule and are a regular NCAA Tournament participant.
SMU has a potent offense, led by returning GNAC Player of the Year Heather Ebner, who's batting .522 with 11 RBIs despite a late start to the season due to injury. Another returning All-GNAC player, Shelby Lawson, is hitting above .400 with 14 RBIs as well, while sophomore Taylor Orgeles leads the Saints with 10 extra base hits and 20 RBIs. Bridget Johnson and Kayla Vaughn are SMU's starting pitchers, with both boasting ERAs under four and winning records on the season, as well as solid strikeout to walk ratios.
Hillsdale finishes Saturday with a game against Edinboro out of the Atlantic Region. The Scots are coming off a 7-31 season in 2025 and looking to build momentum towards a better finish this season after a 1-7 start.
Outfielders Hillary Sissem, a sophomore, and Isabella Becker, a junior, are among Edinboro's top hitters at the plate. Another outfielder, junior Ashley Rose, and sophomore catcher Emalie Thomas have excelled in part-time roles, with Thomas leading Edinboro in OPS and Rose leading the team in RBIs so far. The Scots have three returning pitchers in the circle who've started all their games so far – Kelsey Warren, Giana Ficcaglia and Grace Kessel – with Ficcaglia picking up Edinboro's lone win on the season to date.
On Sunday, Hillsdale travels from Orlando to Florida's east coast to play two contests in the Space Coast Games. The Chargers open the day against a familiar foe in Midwest Regional opponent Lewis, who the Chargers met twice in last season's NCAA Tournament and have a long history with. The Flyers are off to a slower start in 2026, at 3-7 overall, but do have quality wins over Parkside and Purdue Northwest to their name.
Despite the loss of All-American Delaney Garden to graduation, Lewis is still strong offensively, with several recognizable names, including All-Region hitter Kirsten Graham, All-GLVC infielder Anna Frafjord, and lineup stalwarts Nicole Magdziasz and Erica Hoffman, who are all hitting .375 or better on the season. In the circle, Lewis returns an All-Region pitcher in Allie Wondrasek but is leaning heavily on Cleveland State transfer Chloe Gust, Findlay transfer Avery Flynn and freshman Jolee Strohmeyer for most of the starts and innings pitched so far.
In the nightcap on Sunday, Hillsdale faces off against Post University from the East Region. The Eagles are aiming for a better 2026 after a 4-38 record in 2025, and are just getting the season started, with only two games under their belts so far.
Former Post head coach Tracey Garofalo has taken the program back over this season, and has a couple of strong offensive weapons in sophomore Angelica Tompkins, who went 4 for 6 with two extra base hits and two RBIs in the Eagles' season-opening doubleheader, and sophomore Alexandra Basceglia, who was 2 for 3 at the plate in her lone start. Junior Allysa Calabrese and senior Nyla Sapia also return after serving as two of the team's top hitters in 2025. In the circle, Bailey Ruel and Katelyn Lipsky were the starters in Post's first doubleheader, though the Eagles used five pitchers in total on the day.
On Tuesday, Hillsdale swaps Florida coasts to play at the University of Tampa in a doubleheader. Long a powerhouse program in NCAA DII and the national runner-up in 2025, the Spartans dropped out of the national rankings early this season due to a 4-5 start, but are looking much more potent in recent weeks, entering the weekend on a nine game winning streak and with a 13-5 record.
Tampa did have some big holes to fill, including the loss of All-American Mariah Galhouse, but the Spartans are still stocked with talent. Catcher Kinnah Kreidler is one of the top defensive players at her position and a lethal hitter, leading the team in batting average, extra base hits and RBIs, while Makian Brumbelow-Neal, Cam Feast and Karlee Salisbury are all hitting above .325 with solid power numbers as well. In the circle, Tampa returns one of the nation's finest in All-American Gwen McGinnis, who has a microscoping 0.79 ERA and an 8-2 record in 12 appearances so far. Tampa is still looking to solidify its second starter spot by Holly Steffus has stepped up recently, with a 1.91 ERA and a 3-1 record in nine starts.
Hillsdale heads to Lakeland, Florida on Wednesday for a doubleheader against a common spring break opponent, Florida Southern. The Mocs got off to a very slow start in 2026 at 6-13 overall, but seem to be catching fire recently, with five wins in their last six games.
Young talent seems to be winning the day for FSC, with two freshmen making the biggest impact at the plate. GiGi Polanco leads the team in batting average (.375) and the Mocs regulars in OPS (1.032), while Hannah Lewis is driving in runs, with a team-high 11 so far. Gabby Young also has been solid at the plate for FSC, as has catcher Keira Morris. In the circle, returner Des Aitken has been FSC's top arm, with a 3-1 record and a 3.26 ERA in 12 appearances. Natalie Snowden, Ella Torres and Amanda Lieberman are battling for the second starting spot and all have been solid so far, with ERAs under five.
The Chargers enter the trip at 7-7 overall after last weekend's trip to St. Louis, which saw the team split four games and pick up quality wins over Maryville and Purdue Northwest. Hillsdale has a veteran lineup that's already producing consistently, headlined by senior
Taylor Lewis, who's batting .442 to start the season, and senior
Maggie Olaveson, who's hitting .348 with a team-leading three home runs and 13 RBIs. Both are former All-Region players, and Hillsdale also is getting strong contributions from shortstop
Sydney Davis, who's hitting .441, and from Miami (OH) transfer
Nathalie Hagle, who has six extra base hits and 12 RBIs so far, among several impressive newcomers. One of those new faces to watch is freshman
Cayla Contreras, who is batting .389 and hit two home runs in St. Louis this past weekend.
Hillsdale used five pitchers in all three of its weekends to start the season. The staff has shown potential to be a strong group, but the Chargers are looking to develop more consistency as the season approaches the halfway point. Freshman
Katie Jonas is coming on with a strong complete game effort both at the Lewis Dome Invite in February and in St. Louis this past weekend, and has the team's best ERA at 4.20.
Mackenzi Maxson and
Grace Harris also have made a significant number of starts and been solidly effective, while
Anistyn Foster and
Gracelynn Kelly each have made important relief appearances for the Chargers as well.
The Chargers are meeting St. Martin for the first time ever on the softball diamond this week, but has history with their other five opponents. Hillsdale won the only prior meeting with Edinboro in 1997 and Post in 2020, and are playing Tampa for the first time since 2011 with a 1-7 mark against the Spartans. Hillsdale has long series with Lewis and Florida Southern – the Chargers are 3-8 all-time against Lewis but won the most recent meeting in the NCAA Tournament last year, and are 5-13 all-time against the Mocs but have won four of the last five outings against the Florida squad.
