Outlook
A strong showing this past week in Florida on the team's annual spring break trip has Hillsdale College hoping to finish their time in the Sunshine state strong and carry that momentum into conference play this weekend.
Hillsdale plays one final doubleheader in Florida on Friday before returning home to start G-MAC play, taking on Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach. Traditionally a strong program in the Sunshine State Conference who entered 2026 on a string of 11 straight winning seasons, the Eagles sit off the pace at 13-13 entering tomorrow's doubleheader, but still a very dangerous team.
ERAU returns several of its top players from last season's squad, including All-American outfielder Leah Oberkehr and standout first baseman Emma Wood. Sophomore Kendall Wilkie is an emerging start at the plate, hitting .476 with a 1.378 OPS, while Iowa Western transfer Mattea Martin has emerged as a reliable bat with a team-high 17 RBIs as well.
In the circle, the Falcons return All-SSC pitcher Shelby Morse, who has a 3.05 ERA on the year and is also a strong part of the team's lineup, as well as second starter Ava Domenici, but ERAU also has gotten a great showing from another Iowa Western transfer, Olivia Dougherty, who leads the Falcons in both strikeouts (75) and ERA (2.15).
On Sunday, Hillsdale returns to Michigan for its first home game at Johnny Williams Field in 2026, kicking off G-MAC play with a doubleheader against Lake Erie. The Storm are 1-11 on the year and still trying to piece together a breakthrough, looking for their first G-MAC Tournament appearance since 2018.
Lake Erie has struggled offensively this season, after losing top hitters Emma Spahr and CJ Garcia to graduation. Senior Peyton Powers was one of the team's better hitters in 2025 and leads the squad in almost all offensive categories, while sophomores Lily Turkowski and Sydney Taylor and junior Megan Miller are also important offensive players.
In the circle, junior Sydney Murray is the ace for Lake Erie, with Turkowski and sophomore Addison Nugent also getting several starts. All three pitchers are veterans, returning from the 2025 squad.
Hillsdale finishes the slate with a trip to Northwood on Tuesday for another G-MAC doubleheader against an old in-state rival. The Timberwolves have been a perennial contender in the G-MAC under head coach Gregg Sauve but have gotten off to a slow start in 2026, sitting at just 6-12 entering conference play.
Despite the record, Northwood's offense remains potent, headlined by returning first-team All-G-MAC honorees Ashley Ziel and Delanie Gale, both multi-year starters and serious weapons in the batting order. Two freshmen are also playing big roles for Northwood, as catcher Jenna Kowalski and outfielder Brinley Eckerman have both done real damage at the plate so far for the Timberwolves.
Junior Kamden Binney has moved up into the ace position in the circle for Northwood, pitching in four of the team's six wins with a 2.39 ERA, while sophomore Dalaney Gage mans the second starting position with important contributions from sophomore Delaney Belding and senior Ashley Ziel.
Hillsdale has gained momentum over its spring break trip, with a 5-2 record to date in Florida to move three games over .500 entering the weekend. Hillsdale's offense has been a difference maker for the Chargers so far, as a veteran lineup has produced consistently in the first 21 games. Two returning All-region players lead the squad, as senior
Taylor Lewis is batting .354 at leadoff with 11 RBIs and eight stolen bases to start the season, and senior
Maggie Olaveson, who has a team-leading three home runs and 16 RBIs. Shortstop
Sydney Davis is hitting .349 with strong production as well.
Newcomers and new starters are really helping add depth to Hillsdale's offense. Miami (OH) transfer
Nathalie Hagle is hitting .349 with a team-leading 18 RBIs in a strong start to the season, while freshmen
Cayla Contreras and
Ava Stripp each have two home runs early in their careers. Sophomore outfielder
Ronnie Craft also has impressed in a bigger role, with a .387 batting average and seven stolen bases in nine starts.
Hillsdale is heavily rotating five pitchers, using the full staff to grind out victories. Senior
Mackenzi Maxson has locked in and taken charge on the Florida trip, giving up just one earned run in 15.2 innings and three victories, including a shutout of 2025 NCAA DII runner-up Tampa. Freshman
Katie Jonas and sophomore Grace Harrs have looked like plausible starting options as well for Hillsdale, with impressive outings, and junior
Gracelynn Kelly and sophomore
Anistyn Foster give the Chargers great depth and talented and proven arms in the bullpen as well.
Embry-Riddle has been a familiar recent opponent for the Chargers on trips to Florida, with seven meetings on four separate occasions starting in 2020. The Falcons lead the all-time series 5-2 but Hillsdale has won two of the last three, including a split with ERAU in 2025. The Chargers are 26-4 all-time against Lake Erie and have won 10 straight dating back to 2021, with Lake Erie's last win in the series coming in a 5-4 decision in 2019. The Chargers have a long and competitive history with Northwood, with 81 meetings dating back to 1990, and neither team carrying a win streak longer than five games in that stretch. The Chargers and Timberwolves split last season, with Northwood winning 3-1 and Hillsdale take a 4-0 decision on April 6, 2025.
