Ill-timed miscues proved costly to the Hillsdale College baseball team in both games of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of visiting Ohio Dominican on Saturday.
The Chargers came into the afternoon on a high after a dominant victory to start the series with the Panthers on Friday night, and badly outhit ODU in both contests, but five uncharacteristic errors allowed the Panthers to make up for that deficit on the scoreboard and come away with two victories, 3-2 and 14-7.
The first game of the doubleheader was a tight affair, with starting pitchers for both teams shining. Hillsdale rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to tie the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Nolan Coppens, and take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by
Billy Porotsky.
Hillsdale had two outs in the top of the seventh after back-to-back strikeouts by closer
Josh Novak, and a chance to end the game, but a pair of errors by the Chargers extended the inning and allowed the tying run to score. Heading into extra innings, ODU got a clutch two-out hit to score the international tiebreak runner and pull ahead 3-2 in the top of the eighth, and ODU's reliever struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
The Chargers had eight hits in the contest to ODU's five, with
Jake Figman going 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Chargers in the contest. Novak (0-2) took the loss in relief for Hillsdale, striking out three batters and walking one in two innings. Starter
Jacob Pallo had an excellent bounce-back game for Hillsdale in the loss, striking out four, walking one, and giving up just three hits and one earned run in six solid innings for the Chargers.
In the nightcap, Hillsdale got the bats going, finishing with seven runs on 14 hits, but the Chargers couldn't dig their way out of a nightmare first inning that saw ODU take a seven run lead on just two hits. Three Chargers errors played a major role in the early outburst, along with three walks and a hit by pitch.
Hillsdale did its best to climb back into the game despite the early deficit.
Tyler Sowers cut into the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double to make it 7-2 Panthers, and the Chargers added two more runs in the bottom of the second, including a RBI single by
Rocco Tenuta, to cut the gap to three.
The Chargers trailed just 7-5 entering the top of the fifth after Swenson drove
Aaron Jasiak home on a RBI single after a leadoff triple by the shortstop, but Hillsdale couldn't hold ODU in the fifth and sixth innings, as the Panthers scored seven more runs to pull away. Jasiak added a RBI double in the fifth and
Tyler Turner a RBI single in the sixth to try and keep Hillsdale in it, but it wasn't enough in a 14-7 defeat.
Jasiak had a strong day at the plate in the nightcap, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and a triple, and Swenson, Tenuta, Figman, Turner and
Logan Dichler each added two hits for Hillsdale.Â
Jeff Klominek (1-2) started the game and took the loss for Hillsdale, while
Hayden Hoffpauir went three and two thirds innings of relief with two strikeouts and three walks and
Collin Lange,
Isaac Scavarda and
Nate Albanese each pitched an inning as well for the Chargers.
Hillsdale is now 10-14 overall, 6-5 in G-MAC play and will have to rebound quickly from a tough day, as the Chargers are still in the G-MAC North Division race and still have a shot to split the series with a win in the final game on Sunday, beginning at noon.
