Outlook
Hillsdale heads south to St. Louis this weekend looking for warm weather and good competition as the Chargers continue their preparations for the start of G-MAC play later this month. Four games against three solid regional foes are on tap for Hillsdale this Saturday and Sunday in an invitational hosted by Maryville University.
The Chargers open on Saturday with a game against Wisconsin Parkside. The Rangers were an above .500 team in 2025 that made a nice run in the GLIAC Tournament, but are off to a 3-8 start in 2026 and looking for a bounce-back weekend.
Parkside is built around catcher/infielder Mia Johnson, a two-time GLIAC Player of the Year and consensus All-American Mia Johnson, who's hitting .606 this year with 13 extra base hits and 13 RBIs in 11 games. She's backed up by returning All-GLIAC players Ava Swain and Megan Medlin, while junior infielder CiCi Di Silvio is batting .278 and second on the team with eight RBIs.
In the circle, Parkside has put up good numbers. The Rangers replaced graduated ace Olivia Masnica with Bryant & Stratton transfer Holly Lowenberg, who's 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA so far. Second starter Ellie Curtis returns for Parkside after going 10-4 last season as well. Sophomore Casey Jo Vermett is another experienced arm with multiple starts under her belt this season, and freshman Melanie Andrysiak has done well in relief situations as well for the Rangers.
Hillsdale plays host Maryville in two games, one each on Saturday and Sunday. The Saints are 7-8 so far this season and looking to build on solid campaigns in 2023 and 2025 that saw Maryville just miss the NCAA Tournament.
The Saints are a powerhouse team at the plate, with 20 home runs in just 15 games. Freshman infielder Laila Ruiz is leading the charge with eight home runs, but teammate and junior Jenna Kosnoff isn't far behind with six of her own. Sophomore Emily Erb and 2025 All-GLVC honoree Addison Koth are two more top bats for Maryville.
In the circle, the Saints return 2025 starter and All-GLVC honoree Cora Boyle, but have also leaned heavily on freshman Nora Johnson, who leads Maryville in both starts (six) and ERA (2.38). Freshmen Mia Maxel and Aubrey Scieszinski have both gotten a significant workload as pitchers as well for the Saints so far.
Hillsdale wraps up the weekend with Purdue Northwest on Sunday. The Pride are 6-4 overall and looking to rebound from a rough 2025 season that saw them fall significantly off the winning pace the team had set in the prior three seasons.
PNW returns a veteran lineup that includes five past All-GLIAC honorees, and that experience is paying dividends so far. First teamer Kylie Dugan is hitting .367 and lead the Pride in on-base percentage, while Emma Fair, Amanda DeBoer and Olivia Hernandez are all among the team leaders in RBIs. PNW has an impact newcomer at the plate in freshman Jessy Del Toro who's hitting .433 with six RBIs as well.
In the circle, the Pride also have veterans, with three of their top four pitchers from 2025 returning. The most effective so far has been sophomore Jordyn Roop, who's got a 0.50 ERA and two shutouts in three appearances, but senior Hailie Charmat has a 1.98 ERA as well and Abbey Bond and freshman Chloe Tanner have also impressed in starts, giving PNW many options to turn to.
The Chargers sit at 5-5 after opening the season by going 2-3 in Texas, with a win over then top-ranked Texas-Tyler, and then finishing 3-2 in the Lewis Dome Invite two weeks ago. Hillsdale has a veteran lineup that's already producing consistently, headlined by senior
Taylor Lewis, who's batting .483 to start the season, and senior
Maggie Olaveson, who's hitting .394 with a team-leading three home runs and 10 RBIs. Both are former All-Region players, and Hillsdale also is getting strong contributions from shortstop
Sydney Davis, who's hitting .406, and from Miami (OH) transfer
Nathalie Hagle, who has four extra base hits and eight RBIs so far, among several impressive newcomers.
Hillsdale used five pitchers in both of its weekends to start the season. Senior
Mackenzi Maxson has been effective on the mound, with the team's best ERA and most strikeouts, and has been unlucky not to collect a win so far. Sophomore
Grace Harris is 4-1 for the Chargers as well with a solid ERA, while freshman
Katie Jonas picked up her first career win in the Dome Invitational and sophomore
Anistyn Foster added a save.
Gracelynn Kelly is another veteran arm with closing potential out of the bullpen for the Chargers.
As mentioned above, Hillsdale has prior history with all five teams, many of whom they have met in past editions of the Lewis Dome Invite. The Chargers are 0-2 all-time against Bemidji State and 0-5 against Truman State, and will be looking for their first victory over both teams. The Chargers are 3-9 all-time against Quincy, but won the most recent meeting with the Hawks 5-0 on March 3, 2024 in a doubleheader split. Hillsdale is 2-3 all-time against Duluth, and won the most recent meeting last season in Florida, 6-4, and the Chargers have triumphed in both prior meetings with Upper Iowa, including a 4-0 win in the Dome on Feb. 23, 2024.
This weekend marks Hillsdale's first-ever competition in softball against Maryville, but the Chargers do have past meetings with their other two opponents. Hillsdale is looking for its first win against Parkside after going 0-4 in four prior meetings, most recently a 5-3 loss in the 2020 edition of the Lewis Dome Invite. The Chargers are 1-2 against Purdue Northwest, splitting a pair of meetings in 2024 after falling 4-3 to the Pride in 2022.
