The Hillsdale College women's tennis team got back on a winning track with a hard-fought victory over visiting Roosevelt on Sunday.
Playing without top-ranked singles player
Ane Dannhauser, the match wasn't as easy as the 6-1 final score indicated, as Hillsdale played three three-set matches in order to dispatch the Lakers.
The Chargers opened up by earning a competitive doubles point. Hillsdale's top team of Brianna Rees and
Dimitra Papastavrou took a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 3 doubles pairing of
Isabella Spinazze and
Julia Zlateva pulled out a tight 7-5 match to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Rees showed grit in fighting back from a 6-2 first set loss, winning a second set tiebreak and taking the third set 6-1 to beat Roosevelt's Sophie Christie at No. 1 singles. Papastavrou also got a tough victory at No. 3 singles for the Chargers, holding on to win a roller-coaster 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 match over Roosevelt's Zeynep Barut.
At No. 4 singles, Zlateva impressed playing a spot higher than normal in the Chargers' lineup in a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the Laker's Nathalie Ramazzini, and
Esther Sura also was up to a new challenge at No. 5 singles, rolling past Milena Novikova of Roosevelt 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match.
Emma Palus did well at No. 6 singles as well for the Chargers, getting stronger as the match wore on to take a comfortable 6-4, 6-0 victory over Roosevelt's Malena Moya.
Hillsdale improves to 6-3 with the victory, snapping a three-match losing streak and giving themselves needed momentum entering a tough spring break trip to Texas. The Chargers will play the 12th-ranked team in NCAA DII, Midwestern State, on Monday, March 16, and then will be in action again on Tuesday, March 17 with a dual against NCAA DI foe Tarleton State. Â
