Shorthanded Chargers fall to Walsh, 4-2, in regular season finale

The Hillsdale College men's tennis team couldn't overcome a lack of manpower on the road against Walsh on Saturday, falling 4-2 to the Cavaliers in its final regular season match.

The Chargers only had five healthy players available for the contest, forcing them to forfeit one doubles and one singles match before the contest even started.

Despite the disadvantage, Hillsdale fought hard. Walsh took the doubles point, but it was in spite of a 6-3 win by Hillsdale's No. 1 doubles team of Ellis Klanduch and Sam Plys.

In singles play, Klanduch pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Walsh's Nicolas Strohle, and Alex Cordero Lopez won for the Chargers, 6-4, 6-1 over Walsh's Joan Dasi at No. 3 singles.

Sophomore Rintaro Goda was ahead at No. 4 singles as well, 7-5, 2-1, when Walsh won its fourth point to clinch the match.

Hillsdale finishes the regular season 9-9 overall and 4-4 in G-MAC play. The Chargers will be the fifth seed in next week's G-MAC Tournament and will look to use the layoff to get healthy. With a real possibility of fielding a full lineup for the quarterfinal, Hillsdale will look to get revenge on the Cavaliers, who are the fourth seed in the tourney, in an immediate rematch. The start time of that match will be announced later this week.
