Outlook
An offensive explosion has propelled Hillsdale to the top of the G-MAC standings eight games in, but the Chargers now must prove themselves capable of holding on to that advantage against two top contenders on the road over Easter weekend.
First up for Hillsdale is a doubleheader on Friday at defending G-MAC regular season champion and preseason favorite Tiffin. A 43-win team with a record-setting offense in 2025, Tiffin hasn't been able to duplicate that form so far this season, but at 15-9 overall and 5-1 in G-MAC play remain a formidable opponent and legitimate G-MAC contender.
Tiffin has a solid offense built around returning All-American Jessica Miller, who was G-MAC Player of the Year in 2025. Miller isn't quite playing at that level in 2026 but remains an extremely dangerous middle of the order bat, with a 1.020 OPS, six home runs and a team-leading 22 RBI. She's bookended in the lineup by two returning All-G-MAC players and strong hitters in their own right in junior Reagan Mingerink, second on the team in RBIs with 19, and junior Tori McPherson, third in RBIs with 16. Two newcomers to the lineup who are also playing key roles are freshman McKenna Scott, batting leadoff and leading the team in batting average, and Ella Esterby, who's become a two-way player this year for the Dragons with a strong .364 batting average as well.
Tiffin is formidable in the circle with Esterby, an All-Region pitcher as a sophomore in 2025. She remains one of the G-MAC's best in 2026 with a 1.88 ERA and 65 strikeouts to 27 walks, and she's backed up by second starter Lexi Key, a dependable veteran with a solid 2.48 ERA as well. Tiffin has relied almost exclusively on their two starters for pitching, with just 1.2 innings given to pitchers other than Esterby and Key this season.
Monday brings another formidable challenge for Hillsdale in the form of the host Oilers. A contender for the G-MAC crown every year, Findlay has another strong team in 2026 and is the only other G-MAC school besides Hillsdale to reach 20 wins at this juncture in the season.
The Oilers have an offense capable of going toe-to-toe with Hillsdale, with the Chargers and Findlay ranking first or second in the G-MAC in nearly every category. Senior Annika Bredel is a large part of that and the current favorite for G-MAC Player of the Year, as she sports a .436 average with 18 extra base hits, including eight home runs, and 29 RBIs along with a 1.324 OPS. Findlay has four players with an OPS above 1.030, with seniors Alexys Antal and Jenna Poulson and junior Anna Jones all surpassing that mark. Junior Joslynne Frazier and sophomore Meghan Heinsman are putting up strong numbers at the plate as well for the Oilers.
In the circle, Findlay once again has a strong and deep pitching staff that allows it to play to matchups. Kayla Dykin has a 3.50 ERA this season after earning first-team All-G-MAC honors in 2025, but it's been Antal who's looked like Findlay's ace so far, with a 9-2 record and a team-leading 2.41 ERA. Freshman Kaylynn Carter has seven starts and a 3.32 ERA as well for Findlay, and Kora Navarro, Sophie Retton and Taylor Post are all solid options out of the bullpen.
While Hillsdale faces a tough weekend, the Chargers present a frightening proposition for opponents as well if Hillsdale can continue its record-setting offensive pace. Â The Chargers lead the G-MAC in home runs (29), and rank second in average (.327), doubles (56), RBIs (174) and on-base percentage .394. On top of the damage the Chargers do with the bat in their hands, Hillsdale also is a terrifying team once it gets on base, with a G-MAC-leading 58 stolen bases.
A deep lineup of dangerous bats is responsible for the offensive outburst. Eight of Hillsdale's nine every-day players are hitting .290 or better, and six .320 or better, in a lineup that puts pressure on pitchers from top to bottom. Returning All-Region player
Taylor Lewis is on a tear, with a .370 average, 11 extra base hits, 17 RBIs and 14 stolen bases for the Chargers, while sophomore Miami (OH) transfer
Nathalie Hagle is just behind at .366 and leads the team in extra-base hits (16) and RBIs (33).
Maggie Olaveson (eight home runs, 29 RBIs) and
Olivia Liguori (six home runs, 20 RBIs) complete a murderer's row of power hitters for the Chargers in the 4-5-6 spots, while leadoff hitter
Ronnie Craft has a 1.151 OPS, 16 stolen bases on the year and is batting .600 in conference play. Proving Hillsdale's offensive depth – nine different players have a home run for the Chargers this season, and eight different Chargers have stolen multiple bases.
In the circle, Hillsdale is heavily rotating five pitchers, using the full staff to grind out victories. Senior
Mackenzi Maxson has the most starts, the best ERA (3.39), the most strikeouts (38) and earned G-MAC Pitcher of the Week honors after shutting out defending national runner-up Tampa in a 1-0 game earlier in the season. Freshman
Katie Jonas, sophomores
Grace Harris and
Anistyn Foster, and junior
Gracelynn Kelly have all had moments of dominance and are real and credible options in the circle for Hillsdale. In most doubleheaders, four or all five pitchers play a role for the Chargers in getting victories.
Hillsdale has long histories and real rivalries with both Tiffin and Findlay, dating back to shared days in the GLIAC before all three schools moved to the G-MAC roughly a decade ago. The Chargers have a narrow 24-23 lead on the Dragons and Friday's contests should be hotly contested by Tiffin after Hillsdale claimed the G-MAC Tournament crown on the final day over the Dragons, then eliminated Tiffin from the NCAA Tournament the following weekend. Against Findlay, Hillsdale has a 39-25 edge all-time and went 2-1 against the Oilers last season, including a G-MAC Tourney win, but many of the recent contests between the two teams have been close.
