The Hillsdale College men's tennis team claimed a tough road victory at Ashland on Friday, 4-3, to snap a three match losing streak.
Key to the narrow victory was big wins in doubles. Hillsdale swept all three matches but needed tiebreaker wins from
Henry Hammond and
Ellis Klanduch at No. 1 doubles and
Jackson Clements and
Alex Cordero Lopez at No. 3 doubles to secure a point that ended up deciding the match. Hillsdale's No. 2 doubles team of
Sam Plys and
Ryan Papazov also picked up a 6-1 victory as well.
In singles play, Papazov took a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ashland's Kaj Salzano at No. 2 singles, and Cordero Lopez also rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles over the Eagles' Ryohei Miyake. Those wins put Hillsdale within one point of clinching the match, and Klanduch got it done for the Chargers, rallying from a 6-4 first set loss with 6-2, 6-2 victories to beat Bernardo Duarte of Ashland in three sets at No. 3 singles.
Hillsdale is now 6-8 overall, 1-3 in G-MAC play and continues its road trip on Saturday with a match at Cedarville, beginning at 3 p.m.
