The Hillsdale College action shooting team got the 2026-27 campaign off to a solid start on Sunday, with several strong placements at a WRCHC match to kick off the season.

Two Hillsdale seniors placed in the top 10 overall in the 87-shooter event, with Jonah Kirstein leading the way with a fifth-place finish, and third among competitors in the Limited Optics division. Teammate John Beecher was close behind, finishing ninth overall and sixth in the Limited Optics Division, while sophomore William Grohs took 18th overall and 11th in the Limited Optics Division.

Hillsdale's female shooters continued to excel as well. The Chargers swept the podium in the Ladies Limited Division, with senior Jianna Coppola taking the title, Clara Bozzay placing second and Kathryn Madden placing third. Senior Kayla Davenport took first in the Ladies Limited Optics Division as well.

Joseph Beecher placed fourth in the Limited Division for the Chargers and head coach Adam Burlew won the Limited 10 Division title as well for the Chargers.

"We were overall very proud and excited about how our team performed in our first full match of the season," Burlew said. "When the results were released, our athletes were well represented in the top tier of shooters at the match, and even our newer shooters showed a level of competence and mastery of shooting fundamentals that exceeded that of many far more experienced competitive shooters there.

"There were still a few mistakes made and areas to clean up, but the team is looking good across the board and we are excited to see how we improve after a promising start."

Hillsdale will next travel to Dorr, Michigan on the west side of the state for an Oak Hill USPSA match on August 30.
