The Hillsdale College action shooting team put together a strong performance in its first official United States Practical Shooting Association competition on Sunday, continuing an impressive start to the 2026-27 school year.

The Chargers competed in a match at Oak Hill in Dorr, Michigan, battling challenging conditions as overnight rain made the shooting courses muddy and slippery. Despite the less-than-ideal footing, two Hillsdale competitors were able to record top 10 overall finishes, with senior John Beecher placing eighth and fourth in the Limited Optics Division, while fellow senior Jonah Kirstein took ninth overall and fifth in Limited Optics. Will Grohs also placed seventh in Limited Optics for the Chargers.

Hillsdale's female shooters continued to stand out from their competitors as well. Kayla Mullin was the top lady finisher overall and took first among women shooters in Limited Optics, and Charger women swept the Limited category podium, with Jianna Coppola placing first, Clara Bozzay taking second and Kathryn Madden placing third overall.

"The team did a great job keeping morale high, encouraging one another, and performing as well as could be expected given the conditions," Mullin said. "As a whole, we stayed very consistent throughout the match and several of us had some outstanding stages."

Accuracy was a major part of Hillsdale's success, as Mullin, Grohs and John Blaney went through the entire stage with no misses or penalties, and two or less Delta marks (one point hits), with all other hits being Alpha (five point) or Charlie (three point) hits. Blaney led the Chargers with 124 high-value Alpha marks.

Next, Hillsdale will compete at home for the first time on Saturday at the Ailes Action Shooting Range on the campus of the Halter Shooting Sports Center in a USPSA match.
