Members of the Hillsdale College Shotgun Team competed in both the International and American portions of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) High School National Championship from July 7-18. The event, held at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, OH, is one of the largest shooting events in the world featuring over 2,800 youth athletes competing in a variety of disciplines. The ACUI/SCTP Collegiate International Nationals was also run concurrently with this event.
The event began with SCTP's Olympic-style National Championship. In International Skeet, senior Luke Johnson finished 2nd in the Men's final to earn both 2nd place ACUI Collegiate and selection to SCTP's International Team. Johnson broke 109/125 targets in qualification. Also hitting the same number of targets was sophomore Zach Hinze. He was given ACUI Collegiate National Champion title after a shootoff. Incoming freshman Cameron Roberts broke 108 targets and was awarded the SCTP Collegiate Men's Skeet National Championship.
Sophomore RomanBarrett led the way for the Chargers in International Trap (Bunker). With a score of 108/125, he was crowned ACUI Collegiate Men's International Trap National Champion. Junior Lucci Kern took 2nd place ACUI Collegiate Women in the discipline. Incoming freshman Kinsey Duzan performed well enough to earn the SCTP Women's Varsity Bunker National Championship.
The Chargers swept the men's podium in Trap Doubles with 1st place going to '26 grad Leif Andersen (192/200) and 2nd and 3rd respectively for senior Davis Hay (192/200) and Barrett (191/200). Hillsdale took 1st Collegiate Team with a total score of 953/1000. Sophomores Max Versluys (191/200) and Hinze (187/200) rounded out the squad.
In American Skeet, Hillsdale took 2nd place Collegiate Team after hitting 593/600 targets. Hinze's 199/200 earned him 2nd place men's Skeet. Hay (198) and sophomore David Texas Ardis (196) were the other contributors.
The squad of Hay (189), Ardis (187), and Versluys (178) finished with a silver medal for Collegiate Team Sporting Clays. Hay was runner-up in the men's collegiate category.
Breaking 293 out of a possible 300 targets in Skeet Doubles, Hillsdale took 1st place Collegiate Team for Skeet Doubles. Versluys and Hay each hit 98 out of 100 targets and Hinze hit 97. Cameron Roberts, competing for Mattawan Clay Target Team as a collegiate, earned a bronze medal with his collegiate squad. He is joining Hillsdale as a transfer this Fall.
Davis Hay was Hillsdale's top finisher in High Overall. With 584/600 targets, he was just a target behind 1st and won the silver medal. Just 3 targets out of the bronze was David Texas Ardis. There was no Team High Overall award for collegiates.
Two Chargers, Marin McKinney and Taylor Dale, competed in the Green Cup at the Umbriaverde Shooting Range in Italy. McKinney earned a silver medal for Ladies Junior Team.
At the NSSA Junior World Skeet Competition, Max Versluys earned the Collegiate Champion title in 12ga. He broke a perfect 100/100.
The Hillsdale College Shotgun Team returns to campus August 17th. Their first competition will be the Lieske Series Stop #4 NSCA shoot held at Bald Mountain Shooting Range on August 22nd.
