Chargers shatter 54-hole team record to place runner-up at UIndy Invitational

The Hillsdale College men's golf team put to rest any doubts that their season-opening team title was a fluke with another historic performance in the UIndy Invitational this past Monday and Tuesday.

The Chargers shot a 282-281-273=836 to finish runner-up in the 14 team invitational held at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, posting a score that was a mind-boggling 28 strokes under par and 15 strokes better than the previous best by a Hillsdale team since the program restarted in 2014. Only a similarly stunning performance by champion Grand Valley State kept the Chargers from reaching the top of the leaderboard for the second-straight invitational, as Hillsdale finished a full 20 strokes clear of every other team in the field besides the Lakers.

Wet and wild weather on the first day didn't faze Hillsdale at all as the Chargers raced into second place with a 13-under score through 36 holes. As the weather cleared up for the final round, Hillsdale took full advantage, going another 15 strokes under par to leave the rest of the field besides GVSU in the dust.

All five of Hillsdale's golfers posted top 20 finishes in the event, and the Chargers placed two in the top 10, headlined by a seventh-place finish from junior Robert Thompson with a 71-73-64=208. Fresh off his first medalist honor two weeks ago, Thompson got off to a rocky start, sitting at even par and with the fourth best score among his teammates entering the final round. But Thompson caught fire in the final 18 holes and closed with an unbelievable flurry, shooting an eight-under 64 that included seven birdies and an eagle. Three of those birdies and the eagle came in four consecutive holes as Thompson shot up the leaderboard to earn a second-straight top 10 and finish just one stroke shy of tying the program's 54-hole record for the second straight week.

He was followed closely by freshman Parker Stalcup, who showed no signs of nerves in his collegiate debut, tying for eighth at 7-under with a 70-68-71=209. Stalcup's steady play and ability to make par with mechanical precision stood out, as he finished with just five bogeys in 54 holes and no doubles. The freshman especially showed his command in a nervy final round, where he made a birdie to offset each of his three bogeys and keep his place in the top 10 despite immense pressure.

Junior Oliver Marshall continued a successful return from injury by tying for 16th place with a solid 71-70-71=212, playing all three rounds under par, while sophomore Jackson Piacsek and junior Ryan O'Rourke finished a stroke back from Marshall at 213 to tie for 18th place. Piacsek carded a 70-70-73=213, while O'Rourke rallied from a slow start with a strong final round to finish 72-74-67=213.

All five of Hillsdale's golfers either set new personal best 54-hole scores or matched their previous personal best in an impressive performance. The Chargers feasted on Par 5s, shooting a combined 31-under on those holes in the event, and had the fewest double-plus bogeys of any team in the competition.

Piacsek and Thompson shot a combined 15-under on Par 5s to help drive that performance, while Marshall was third among all players with 40 pars.

Hillsdale now has its best-ever performance in consecutive events, following a title at the Malone-Glenmoor Fall Classic with this runner-up finish. The Chargers are in an excellent position in the Midwest Region two events into the season, and will have a chance to separate further from the field at the Midwest Collegiate in Peru, Indiana next Monday. Hosted by Missouri-St. Louis, all of the top teams in the Midwest Region outside of Grand Valley St. and Wayne St. will be in attendance, giving Hillsdale another opportunity to measure itself against the region's best.
