Chargers' Thompson wins Midwest Collegiate medalist honor in final hole drama

In a pressure-packed final three holes, Hillsdale junior Robert Thompson rode a roller-coaster of results and came out on top, claiming medalist honors at the Midwest Collegiate on Tuesday for his second invitational title of 2025.

Playing at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Indiana, Thompson was among the leaders throughout the 54-hole invitational, and was in a three-way tie for first place with three holes to go after a bogeyless one-under first 15 holes of the championship.

Thompson appeared to seize control of the event on his 16th hole of competition, birdieing the 296-yard Par-4 1st to take sole possession of first place, but gave back the advantage with a bogey on the 455-yard Par-4 2nd, and went to the final hole of the round, the 537-yard Par 5 3rd hole staring down the specter of a three-man playoff unless he could conjure some magic.

With the title on the line and pressure at its peak, Thompson performed brilliantly, making four on the par 5 for his third birdie of the round and finishing one stroke clear of runners-up Mitchell Brassard of Tiffin and Peyton Woods of Illinois-Springfield for the second individual crown of his career and his second in three events.

While the win came down to the final hole, it was well deserved for Thompson, who played top-notch golf from start to finish. He was one of only two players along with Brassard to shoot under par for all three rounds, carding a 71-69-70=210, and the only player in the tournament to finish in the top five in scoring on all Par 3s, Par 4s and Par 5s.

The victory continues an unprecedented start to the season for Thompson, who has been under par for seven of the nine rounds he's played so far and sits at an amazing 22-under for the season to date.

As a team, Hillsdale shot an 891 to finish seventh out of 17 squads, but just eight strokes out of second place on a tightly packed leaderboard. Junior Oliver Marshall shot a 74-75-79=228 to tie for 36th for Hillsdale on a tough course, while sophomore Jackson Piacsek carded a 77-75-77=229 to finish one stroke back in a tie for 38th, and Ryan O'Rourke shot a 75-82-74=231 to tie for 47th.

Freshman John Cassiday, brought to the tournament by the Chargers to play as an individual, did not count toward Hillsdale's team placement but had a solid performance, shooting a 71-76-74=221 to just miss a top 10 finish in a tie for 13th place.

While the result is not what Hillsdale wanted as a team, the closeness of the scores between teams throughout the field and the overall finish means the impact on the Chargers' otherwise hot start will be mild, if there is an impact at all.

The Chargers will await the first Regional Rankings of the season in October to see where they stand, and are also looking forward to the Doc Spragg Invitational hosted by Findlay at the Findlay Country Club on Oct. 13-14. Along with the Oilers and the Midwest Collegiate team champion Tiffin Dragons, many other of the region's top teams will be in attendance in another opportunity for Hillsdale to make big moves in the regional standings before the winter break.
