Chargers comeback falls short as Hillsdale bested by UMSL, 10-7, in series finale

Box Score The Hillsdale College baseball team hung tough with host Missouri-St. Louis through five and a half innings on Sunday, but couldn't fully answer as the Tritons pulled away late in a 10-7 victory.

UMSL plated five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to break open a 4-4 tie, then held off a ninth inning comeback by the Chargers to take the victory.

Hillsdale answered the bell multiple times when the Tritons pulled ahead. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Chargers tied up the game in the top of the fourth, as Logan Dichler cashed in a leadoff double by Nolan Coppens with a RBI single to get Hillsdale on the board, and Aaron Jasiak later tied up the game on a RBI single of his own.

When UMSL answered back with two more runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth, Hillsdale again had a response in the top of the sixth. Dichler had a double to start the rally, later scoring on a fielder's choice, and Rocco Tenuta hit a single to right field to pull the Chargers back to level at four runs apiece.

The third time the Tritons pulled ahead, however, would be for good, as UMSL plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a commanding edge. Tenuta hit a RBI single in the top of the eighth to make it 9-5, UMSL, but the Tritons countered with another run in the bottom of the frame to restore a five run edge entering the final inning.

Down to their final three outs, Hillsdale made things interesting, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by Billy Porotsky and a a RBI single by Aaron Jasiak to cut the deficit to 10-7. The Chargers had the potential tying run at the plate with two outs, but Hillsdale's comeback was stopped short in the ninth.

Dichler finished 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI to lead Hillsdale offensively, and Tenuta was 3 for 4 with two RBIs as well. Coppens chipped in a single and a double for the Chargers, and Jasiak also finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Logan McLaughlin got the start for Hillsdale, pitching five innings, and Josh Novak (0-1) took the loss in relief, striking out three and walking two in an inning and two-thirds of work. Winston Delp and Jasiak each pitched as well in relief for the Chargers.

Now 4-9, Hillsdale must regroup quickly for the start of conference play. The Chargers kick off the G-MAC schedule this coming weekend with a four game set at Thomas More, beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader.
