Thompson records sixth top 10 finish of season; Chargers finish 13th at Ken Partridge Invite

Hillsdale's Robert Thompson recaptured the magic of his fall performances on Sunday and Monday at the Ken Partridge Invitational, as the junior led the Chargers with his sixth top 10 finish of the season.

As a team, Hillsdale struggled to cope with cold and extremely windy conditions that affected the play of all 18 teams in the event, shooting a 306-295-302=903 to finish 13th in the Chargers' final event before the G-MAC Championships later this month.

Thompson was one Charger who successfully battled the elements, shooting a 74-73-73=220, strong and consistent scores under difficult weather conditions in an event where just two players finished the 54-hole invitational under par.

Thompson feasted on Par 5 holes to keep his score low, shooting a combined eight-under on those holes and finishing just one stroke off the top players in the invite on Par 5s. Eight of his 10 birdies for the weekend came on Par 5s.

It's a return to form for Thompson, who missed the top 10 in his first two events of the spring after finishing seventh or better in five straight events in the fall, including two medalist honors and a runner-up honor. The top 10 finish bodes well for Thompson heading into the G-MAC Championships, where he will look to contend for All-G-MAC honors for the third straight year and get the Chargers into the match play final for the first time in program history.

Hillsdale's other five golfers were not as successful with handling the tricky conditions. Jackson Piacsek was the Chargers' next best finisher, tying for 49th with a 75-77-76=228, and Hillsdale's two freshmen, John Cassiday and Parker Stalcup, each shot a 231 to finish tied for 63rd. Cassiday posted an 81-75-75, and Stalcup shot an 80-73-78 across three rounds.

Oliver Marshall finished tied for 73rd with a 79-74-79=232, and Maxwell Burns tied for 98th with a 78-80-80 as well.

The Chargers are still in contention for an at-large berth in the NCAA Central/Midwest Super Regional, but will need to shore up a top 10 finish in the Midwest Regional rankings with a strong showing at the G-MAC Championships, taking place on April 20-22 at the BelTerra Golf Resort in Florence, Indiana. Hillsdale also can lock up an automatic bid if it can claim the conference title by winning the G-MAC Championship for the first time.
