It's the start of conference play and a chance to reset for the Hillsdale College baseball team as the Chargers travel to Thomas More for a four game set.

The Saints have yet to qualify for a G-MAC Tournament as a member of the conference, but are off to a solid start with a 6-5 record in nonconference action entering the G-MAC season. The Saints are hoping to push for a tourney bid and a winning record after going 9-20 in conference play in 2025.

Thomas More's offense has been a major bright spot so far, as the Saints rank second in the G-MAC in batting average and third in on base percentage through 11 games after ranking in the bottom half of the league in both stats in 2025. The Saints have six regular starters batting over .300, led by freshman shortstop Jack Geers, who's hitting .333 with a team-leading eight extra base hits and 13 RBIs. Leadoff man Ty Cunningham is also playing solidly with a .533 OBP, while junior third baseman Nolan Krekeler is batting .351 with 11 RBIs as well. Senior Gunner Kalkhoff is another experienced returner coming off a strong 2025, while outfielder Matt Resing is hitting a sensational .560 in the seven games he's been healthy for Thomas More.

The Saints have an almost entirely new pitching lineup from last season, with only spot starter Jack Perdue returning from 2025's starting group. The ace is redshirt sophomore Joe Stone, who missed all of 2025 with an injury but is 2-0 in three starts with a 4.80 ERA that leads Thomas' More's starters. Kellen Sandhas, who's also making his return from an injury that kept him out all of 2025, and sophomore Logan Cones are the other every-weekend starters. Options to start the fourth game include Perdue and senior Garrett Taulbee, who each only have one start this season, but both are 1-0 so far.

In the bullpen, the Saints' top arm is Cameron Snider, who has four saves in four appearances and a solid 3.00 ERA. Other frequently used arms for Thomas More are Will Harrison, Aaron Wichmann and Keaton Bach.

Hillsdale enters the conference season looking for more consistency after a 4-9 start to the year where the Chargers showed flashes of being a high-caliber team but struggled to sustain that momentum across weekend series.

The Chargers have several veterans in the lineup who've proven themselves at the plate. Shortstop Aaron Jasiak is hitting a career best .340 to lead the Chargers in that stat, while third baseman Rocco Tenuta has continued to be a leader for the Chargers with a team high seven extra base hits and 13 RBIs. Outfielder Gaard Swenson has 12 RBIs as well while hitting leadoff for the Chargers, and stellar freshman Nolan Coppens and returning All-G-MAC shortstop Billy Porotsky are hitting above .300 as well.

The Chargers have gotten solid starts from new faces and new starters. Outfielder Jake Figman had hero moments in both the Montevallo and Lincoln Memorial series and was named G-MAC Player of the Week earlier this season, while Hillsdale's new catcher rotation of Logan Dichler and Ryan Wiehe have each had strong games. Drew Law is another exciting freshman for the Chargers, while key returners Will Lehman and Tyler Sowers are looking to get on track after slow starts to the 2026 season.

Hillsdale will look to continue to improve its pitching staff in 2026. Despite significant injury trouble in 2025, the Chargers posted a 5.49 ERA, the team's best mark since 2018.

The Chargers are still dealing with injury availability for several of their top arms into 2026, but Hillsdale is making it work early on with several players stepping into new roles. Junior Jacob Pallo is a reliable veteran starter who's heading the staff entering this weekend's series, while fellow junior Logan McLaughlin has been solid since moving into the starting rotation from the bullpen.

Two of Hillsdale's best pitchers so far have been relievers Patrick MacLean and Brenden Smith, who've both excelled in multiple long relief appearances for the Chargers. MacLean was named the G-MAC North Division Pitcher of the week earlier this month, while Smith looked decent in a starting role against GVSU and Missouri-St. Louis. The Chargers also have gotten strong relief appearances from Josh Novak, getting his first real playing time back from injuries that cost him his first two seasons, and Collin Lange. Winston Delp is another important reliever for the Chargers, while youngsters Isaac Scavarda, Jeff Klominek and Nate Albanese are taking on significant roles early in their careers.

Hillsdale is hoping to reinforce its staff throughout the season with players making healthy returns from injuries, including two-year starter Daniel Higdon and key relievers Aaron Jasiak and Hayden Hoffpauir, among others. Jasiak and Hoffpauir have both pitched in the last two series, with Hoffpauir having a strong outing against UMSL last weekend.

The Chargers and Saints first met on the diamond in 2025, with Hillsdale splitting four games against the newest G-MAC member in the friendly confines of Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium and TFO Partners Field.
