Preview
Hillsdale split with a tough Malone team in its first home series of the season last weekend, and now play host to Ohio Dominican in its final crossover series with G-MAC South Division foes before starting play against the Chargers' fellow North Division squads.
ODU has been a solid team in the G-MAC, making the tournament each of the past three seasons, and the Panthers are looking to contend for a G-MAC South Division crown after reaching the G-MAC Tourney title game last season. ODU split its first two G-MAC series and sit a game back of G-MAC South leader Cedarville at 4-4 entering the weekend.
The Panthers have gotten some early success in the G-MAC thanks to solid pitching performances in conference play, as ODU ranks fourth in conference ERA at 5.06. ODU returns its top three starting pitchers from last season, headlined by sophomore Jaxson Stried, who leads the starters in ERA and senior Steven Chapman, who has 26 strikeouts to just seven walks. Sophomore Landon Ringhiser and freshman Colin Hennessey round out the starting staff for the Panthers.
In the bullpen, freshman Andrew Holcomb is off to a great start for ODU as its top reliever, with two saves and a 1.17 ERA in seven appearances. Senior Andrew Mouch and freshmen Bryson Shumate and Carson Willis each have a save as well for the Panthers, while senior transfer Jeremy Ramirez is another frequently deployed arm for ODU.
ODU's pitching and defense have held up a Panthers offense that's still finding its way, as ODU ranks 10
th in the G-MAC in batting average and RBIs and 11
th in slugging percentage. Chapman has been a top bat as a two-way player for the Panthers, hitting .359 with 19 RBIs, and freshman Gavin Lawler has a sky-high 1.400 OPS with 11 extra-base hits and 13 RBIs as well. Fellow freshmen Grant Horne and Will Schirmer are also putting up decent numbers, but the bottom half of the order has struggled for ODU this season and will be looking to have a breakout weekend against the Chargers.
Hillsdale enters the weekend at 5-3 in the G-MAC and tied for second in the North Division after taking a series from Thomas More and splitting with a hard-hitting Malone squad in the first two weeks of conference play. Hillsdale's offense is red hot to start conference play, with a G-MAC best .332 batting average in conference games. Junior
Rocco Tenuta has been supplying power for the Chargers, hitting .313 and leading Hillsdale with seven doubles, five home runs and 24 RBIs, while junior
Tyler Turner is batting .383 and sophomore
Gaard Swenson is hitting .333 with 18 RBIs as well.
Aaron Jasiak,
Billy Porotsky and
Nolan Coppens are other important hitters in the lineup for Hillsdale.
On the mound, Hillsdale is piecing together a staff despite dealing with injuries and youth that have made consistency a challenge at times so far. Sophomore
Brenden Smith is 2-2 and in the midst of a breakout campaign as a starter for the Chargers with a 2.70 ERA, while
Logan McLaughlin has been especially good in recent weeks and sports a 4.02 ERA as well. Freshman
Jeff Klominek will get a chance to lock down a spot in the rotation after a quality start this past weekend, and veteran pitcher
Jacob Pallo completes the rotation.
In the bullpen, senior
Patrick MacLean has been the top reliever for the Chargers, with a win, two saves and a team-leading 1.56 ERA, while
Josh Novak has been a solid closer for Hillsdale, with three saves in eight appearances as well.
Hayden Hoffpauir,
Winston Delp,
Aaron Jasiak and
Isaac Scavarda are other frequently used bullpen arms that Hillsdale can turn to this weekend.
ODU leads the all-time series with Hillsdale 24-15 since the two teams first met in 2011, but the Chargers have won six of the last nine against the Panthers, including taking three of four from ODU in Columbus last season.
