It's an all-Michigan week for Hillsdale, as two midweek contests with GLIAC foe Davenport bookend a critical G-MAC series against in-state rival Northwood on Friday and Saturday heading into the Easter holiday.
The week opens on Wednesday with a home game against Davenport, and closes the following Tuesday with a night contest hosted by the Panthers. A consistent contender in both the GLIAC and the Midwest Region, Davenport got off to a slow start this season but seems to be rounding into form at 14-16 overall and 6-2 in the GLIAC, with a split against nationally-ranked Wayne State this past weekend.
The Panthers enter this week with an excellent offense, ranked second in the GLIAC in most categories and boasting seven lineup regulars who hit .300 or better. Davenport is powered by two seniors, former JuCo transfers Justin Johnson and Dylan Pawenski, who not only lead the team in batting average but also in home runs and RBIs, and hit third and fourth in the order. Immediately behind the pair is senior infielder Travis Liford, who leads the team in doubles (13) and is close behind Johnson and Pawenski in RBIs. Other key hitters for Davenport include Wyatt Epple, Sam Clay, Aiden Warn and Cody Hultink.
While Davenport's offense has been close to elite, the pitching staff's inconsistency has held the Panthers back early in the season, though there are signs in the last two series that Davenport's arms are trending upwards. With Hillsdale and Davenport facing off in a pair of midweeks, Hillsdale is unlikely to see any of the Panthers' top starting arms. Freshman Carson Anthes has been Davenport's regular midweek starter, with a 7.43 ERA in three starts. Top bullpen arms for Davenport include Gabe Helder, Brayden Flanders, Joe Chrapliwy, Gage Vota and Jaden Alberson.
Northwood came into the season off a trip to the NCAA DII World Series and nationally-ranked, but have struggled to a 9-17 start as several of the players that drove that phenomenal 2025 campaign have moved on. Still, at 6-6 in the G-MAC, Northwood is well within striking distance in the North Division and only a game behind the Chargers in the standings.
Returning second team All-G-MAC honoree Caden Duryea leads the Northwood offense and is hitting .374 with 16 extra base hits, including seven home runs, and 20 RBIs. Catcher Anthony Manganello is close behind, hitting .338 with 18 RBIs, and Infielder Brendan Hammer also swings a big bat for the Timberwolves. Other important hitters for Northwood include Evan Larson, Matthew Meyer and Josh Getz.
On the mound, the Timberwolves return two All-G-MAC pitchers in starter Tyler Sager and reliever Cody Matuz. Sager is 2-3 overall with a 6.23 ERA, and he's joined in the starting rotation by GRCC transfer Lucas McKinney, who's been Northwood's best starter with a 4-1 record and a 3.22 ERA, along with senior Connor Foley (3.71 ERA) and freshman Nicholas Hoorn (8.62 ERA).
Along with Matuz in the bullpen, Northwood's top relievers include junior Jackson Crittendon, sophomore two-way player Connor Kelly, and senior Joey Randazzo. Northwood has spread around relief appearances among its staff, with no player appearing in more than seven of Northwood's 26 games to date.
Hillsdale enters the weekend at 7-5 in the G-MAC and third in the North Division entering their first series of the season against a divisional opponent after three straight weekends against G-MAC South teams. The Chargers have been solid offensively, with five regulars hitting above .300.
Rocco Tenuta remains the team's top power bat with 13 extra base hits and a team-best 27 RBIs, but sophomore
Jake Figman is close behind with a .900 OPS.
Gaard Swenson and
Aaron Jasiak both hit well for average and have a combined 23 stolen bases between them, while
Tyler Turner continues to produce in the outfield and freshmen
Nolan Coppens and
Ryan Wiehe, along with sophomore
Billy Porotsky, are also productive parts of the lineup.
On the mound, Hillsdale is piecing together a staff despite dealing with injuries and youth that have made consistency a challenge at times so far. Sophomore
Brenden Smith has been one of the best pitchers in the G-MAC so far with a 2.01 ERA in five starts, and was named the G-MAC North Division Pitcher of the Week for his play against Ohio Dominican.
Logan McLaughlin and
Jacob Pallo have been dependable veteran options on the mound for the Chargers. Hillsdale is still looking for consistency in the fourth starter position, with freshmen
Jeff Klominek and
Isaac Scavarda splitting the job so far.
In the bullpen, senior
Patrick MacLean has been the top reliever for the Chargers, with two wins, two saves and a solid 2.21 ERA, while
Josh Novak has been a dependable closer for Hillsdale, with three saves in nine appearances as well.
Hayden Hoffpauir,
Winston Delp,
Aaron Jasiak,
Collin Lange and
Nate Albanese are other frequently used bullpen arms that Hillsdale can turn to this week.
The Chargers have substantial history with both squads they play over the next seven days. The Chargers are 4-11 against Davenport, a regular midweek opponent for Hillsdale over the years. Hillsdale is looking for its first win over the Panthers since a 13-8 victory in 2025.
Northwood, meanwhile, is one of Hillsdale's oldest foes, with games dating back to the two teams' shared time in the GLIAC. The series is perfectly tied at 54 games apiece since 1993, with neither team putting up a winning streak longer than six games against the other. The two squads played six times last season, with the teams splitting a four-game series in Hillsdale in the regular season, and Northwood winning both games in the G-MAC Tournament to end Hillsdale's season.
