With a 4-1 record in their last five games, Hillsdale heads into a consequential weekend series against the current top team in the G-MAC, Findlay, at home this Friday and Monday. A sweep could propel the Chargers all the way to the top of the North Division, while getting swept could drop Hillsdale out of the G-MAC Tournament entirely, raising the stakes for what should be a competitive rivalry clash.

The Oilers came into the season with high expectations thanks to a great deal of returning talent, but have outperformed even those hopes so far by running out to a 24-14 record and receiving votes in the ABCA Top 25 poll. Findlay isn't at the top of the league in most stats but have paired solid offense with strong pitching, especially in G-MAC play, to run up a two-game lead on the rest of the conference with three series left to play.

Two area where Findlay does excel offensively relative to the rest of the conference are RBIs (a G-MAC best 263) and stolen bases (85, also tops in the league), reflecting a philosophy of using speed to get on base and get runners in scoring position, and then consistently cashing them in. Emblematic of that philosophy are high-OBP players like Nick Palm, Keelan Daniel, Casey Maruniak and Luke Senften at the top of the lineup. Palm, Daniel and Maruniak are talented base-stealers as well, with Maruniak holding the Findlay career record in the stat. He's also a strong hitter for power, leading the team in doubles, home runs and RBIs, and Senften also does extra base damage on top hitting for average. Gavyn Smith, Mason Myers and Aiden Booth are also important hitters who fit the bill for Findlay deeper in the lineup.

On the mound, the Oilers have been solid all season and lights-out in G-MAC play, paced by two strong front-line senior starters in Ethan Mohr and Carson Melott who both have solid ERAs and a combined 9-2 record. Juniors Aidan Kiessling and David Jimenez have been a step down from Mohr and Melott but still quality as Findlay's other two regular starters. In the bullpen, the Oilers return first-team All-G-MAC honoree Camdon Tuttle, who's having another solid season, but he's been outshined in 2026 by senior Colin Becker, who as the top ERA among regularly used Findlay pitchers and a team-best four saves. Connor Evanich, Dylan Rouse and Sebastian Stevens are other frequently deployed bullpen arms.

On Tuesday after the Findlay series ends, Hillsdale heads to Detroit to complete a home-and-home series with Wayne State. The Chargers rallied to beat the Warriors 11-10 at home on April 14 in a midweek, but Wayne State remains nationally ranked, a top regional contender and will be looking for revenge.

Wayne State has an elite and productive offense, paced by junior rightfielder Drew Hill. Hill has been one of the region's best players, hitting .433 with a 1.240 OPS and a team-leading 35 RBIs, while returning All-GLIAC senior Bennett Hitzelberger and junior Owen Tuccinardi each have 26-plus RBIs and a combined 13 home runs as well. Caleb Sanders also is a returning All-GLIAC honoree, with Rhett Roeser and Nick Sandiha Jr. also off to strong starts for a team that's among the GLIAC's best in terms of power.

The Warriors also have been solid on the mound with an impressive 3.84 ERA. In a midweek contest, Hillsdale is unlikely to see any of Wayne State's top four starters, but could face Tusculum transfer Phillip Miller or JuCo transfers Nick Baker and Macio Miller who all have made a start for the Warriors this season. Top bullpen arms for the Warriors include closer Rocco Cardinale, who has a win and four saves in nine appearances, senior TJ McAllister, who has given up one earned run in 11 innings, and Will DeMasse, who started last week's midweek game against the Chargers.

Hillsdale got on a roll against Lake Erie last weekend and followed up with the big win over Wayne State on Tuesday, giving the Chargers hope for a big stretch run into the G-MAC Tourney. The Chargers have been solid offensively, ranking second in the G-MAC in batting average and third in RBIs in conference play with seven regulars hitting above .280. Rocco Tenuta remains the team's top power bat with 17 extra base hits and a team-best .965 OPS and 32 RBIs, but leadoff hitter Gaard Swenson is close behind with a .922 OPS and 30 RBIs and freshman Nolan Coppens has a team-high 12 doubles as well. Jake Figman and Tyler Turner are both batting over .300 as well for the Chargers, while Billy Porotsky and Aaron Jasiak are both hitting over .285 and Carson Tucker has been impressive with a .357 average in spot situations as well. Swenson and Jasiak are dangerous base-stealers for Hillsdale, with 27 stolen bags between them.

The Chargers' struggles have been on the mound, where injuries and youth have made consistency a challenge all season. Sophomore Brenden Smith is in the midst of a breakthrough season on the mound for Hillsdale, with a team best 3.05 ERA that ranks among the G-MAC's top marks, while veteran starters Logan McLaughlin and Jacob Pallo have both shown the capacity for strong starts and have been strong. Hillsdale is still looking to shore up its fourth starting spot, with senior Patrick MacLean bringing an impressive 1.82 ERA out of the bullpen to get a win for the Chargers against Lake Erie last weekend.

With MacLean in the starting rotation now, Hillsdale is thinner in the bullpen, though still with good options. Redshirt sophomore Josh Novak has excelled as the team's close, with a 2.50 ERA and four combined wins and saves in 13 appearances, while Hayden Hoffpauir has posted a 3.06 ERA in eight strong outings as a setup man. Winston Delp, Collin Lange and Nate Albanese are other commonly used relievers, while Hillsdale also can turn to freshmen Isaac Scavarda and Jeff Klominek, who have starting experience this season, and Drew Law may be in the mix as well after a strong showing against Wayne State last Tuesday.

The Chargers and Findlay have a long history, with 101 meetings since 1999 dating back to both teams' time in the GLIAC. Findlay has a 59-42 edge in those contests, but Hillsdale got the better of the Oilers with a 3-2 record in five meetings last season, including a 12-2 victory in the G-MAC Tournament. Hillsdale's history with Wayne State, dating back to both teams' GLIAC days, is heavily in favor of the Warriors, who have a 73-36 record against the Chargers since 1993. Wayne State took three of four from Hillsdale in the most recent series between the two squads, in February of 2025, while Hillsdale got an 11-10 victory in their first meeting in 2026 last week.
